Farnham keep is the remains of a Norman castle, standing on a textbook motte. The castle was owned by the Bishops of Winchester rather than being a royal or noble owned castle.
Visiting
There is no parking on site, other than for disabled parking so you’ll have to walk up the hill from the town centre.
Other than the keep itself the site is privately owned so you can’t access the gardens that surround the keep to view it from that angle. You can do tours of the Bishops Palace and that may give you garden access or that may only be for wedding guests, I have never done either so I’m not sure.
The site is run by English Heritage and their page is here. The EH ticket office has a small exhibition about the history of the castle.
My Experience
Farnham Castle is really just the shell. There are no standing buildings inside although there is an excavation of a previous tower on the site from the original castle. There are nice views of the garden from the battlements but it’s really somewhere you go for 30 minutes rather than a half day place.
